Many owners of the Yaesu FT817 and Icom
IC703 seem to be a
little worried about operating these little HF radios, I know as I spoke to many
owners of the radios at the Harwell Radio Rally in Feb 2011. The reason is that most
people seem to use non resonant antennas and an ATU to match the system. By the
time you have transmitted and matched the non resonant antenna the PA is usually
blown. I have been asked to replaced several of the PA units in the FT817 and by the time you
have paid for the module and labour it costs around £55.00.
G Whip have developed a low cost selection of low power end fed antennas especially designed for the FT817/IC703 and other low power transceivers. Each unit is hand built and tested. The feed-point box is very small, one end has a hook for hanging the unit and the other end is connected to a half wave length of Military grade Racal green Kevlar wire which is lightweight and unbreakable. Note that these units are designed for /P use as they are not IP rated enclosures but the components are potted for weather proofing, no tuner is required and each antenna is individually tested. No adjustments to the antenna are required.
NEW 40 MTR QRP LIGHTWEIGHT PORTABLE VERSION
This is the new 40 Mtr version now available, approx 18 mtrs of lightweight Racal kevlar wire, lightweight box, strain reliefs for support, line and coax. Maximum power handling is 50 watts pep, comes complete with support insulator (Racal spool £5 extra). NO TUNER REQUIRED.

These are actual sweeps of the 7/14/18/21/28MHz versions, 52 ohms with great bandwidth. So, if you are power restricted due to your licence, or want to operate QRP and have an efficient antenna system then use a resonant antenna, DO NOT USE A PIECE OF WIRE AND A TUNER as you end up with virtually nothing at the antenna, remember, an ATU does not tune an antenna, it matches it and there is loss of power to the antenna.
During tests on 7/14/18/21/28MHz we worked VK/ZS/EA8/PY/CE/KP2 with only 10 watts and the best is yet to come as we approach the peak of the 11 year solar cycle.
